Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCWe’re proud to call the communities where we live and work our home. For over 50 years, HHHunt has expanded throughout the Mid-Atlantic and we’ve got lots of community pride! That pride is one of the reasons that we’re highlighting Charleston, South Carolina! As the oldest and largest city in the state, Charleston is rich in history and known for its flavors, sights, sounds and traditions that are unique to this southern city.

There is always something to do in Charleston. The thriving city is home to charming cobblestone streets, guided walking and horse-drawn carriage tours, beautiful parks, gardens, museums, mansions, and so much more. Historic downtown Charleston is a favorite spot where you can find the iconic strip of colorful homes known as Rainbow Row, the College of Charleston, and King Street. And, if you’re a history buff, then a visit to Fort Sumter is a must. Located in Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter is the site of the first shots fired in the Civil War. The South Carolina Aquarium is one of the most visited aquariums in the country and showcases more than 5,000 wild animals. The Sea Turtle Care Center is a popular area of the museum. During the summer, there is no better place to relax and soak up the sun than one of the numerous islands surrounding Charleston. There truly is always something to do!

Charleston is a Millennial Magnet

Charleston is a Millennial Magnet

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCWhere are the millennials going? Charleston, South Carolina according to a recent USA Today piece, “Post-college towns’ brim with youth, jobs.”

The piece uses recent U.S. Census data to identify 289 cities that have more 20-somethings than teens—or simply put, cities that are “Millennial Magnets.” For Charleston, and only a dozen other cities, there is a 2-to-1 or higher ratio. So why are millennials coming to Charleston, one of the oldest cities on the list? USA Today says:

“A booming tech start-up economy and a thriving arts and restaurant scene have helped this…tourist magnet do something that places across the USA have been trying to do for decades: attract young, college-educated workers and keep them there as they start families. The mild weather and easy access to nearly 200 miles of beaches don’t exactly hurt.”

The article calls the recent demographic change in Charleston “nothing short of breath taking,” and that the area’s lifestyle and urban design sensibilities have played major draws for millennials. “They’re in Charleston to live in Charleston.”

As post-college grads flock to Charleston, companies are coming to the Lowcountry to take advantage of the rapidly growing workforce. Lisa Maki, a co-founder of the California tech start-up PokitDok, says half of their employees are based in Charleston and all of them are software engineers. Maki mentions that good engineers in Charleston are “…about half the cost of comparable workers in Silicon Valley,” and not to mention, office space in Charleston is “probably a quarter of the price.”

The piece also highlights the job growth being driven by the many Charleston-based technology startups hiring in the region, including SPARC, Bibliolabs and Benefitfocus, in addition to major aerospace company, Boeing.

With a population growing three times the national average, Charleston is poised to reach a population of more than 1 million in the next 15 years.

Charleston, SC is a Great Place for Millennial Job Seekers

Charleston, SC is a Great Place for Millennial Job Seekers

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 14, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCAlthough the Great Recession hit South Carolina harder than most places, recent economic indicators show the state is making some headway, if slowly. While the unemployment rate hasn’t budged much in the past year, millennials here are primed to find jobs.

Young adults, or millennials, in South Carolina are attracted to the laid-back Southern lifestyle, coastal towns, thriving cities and lower rents throughout the state.

Some of the most successful businesses in the Palmetto State are in sectors such as aerospace, alternative energy, automotive manufacturing, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, distribution, food processing, forestry and wood products, plastics and chemicals as well as recreation, according to the state Department of Commerce. The Charleston metropolitan area, in particular, is seeing a rise in its millennial population as the tech industry moves in.

NerdWallet crunched the numbers for 66 cities and towns in South Carolina to determine the best places for millennial job seekers.

Key takeaways

Millennials are moving to the Charleston area. Half of the places on our list are in the city or within 45 minutes of Charleston — from the city itself to North Charleston and small suburban cities. The city’s economy has been on the upswing and attracting the kind of tech startups that hire large numbers of millennials. Charleston’s waterfront, historic sites, museums, cultural centers, universities, restaurants, retail and, of course, beaches are also appealing.

They are jetsetters — or live near airports. South Carolina millennials can get away at a moment’s notice thanks to their proximity to the state’s airports. Five of the places on our list have airports within city limits including Aiken Municipal Airport, Berkeley County Airport, Charleston International Airport, Columbia Metropolitan Airport and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

Best places for millennial job seekers in South Carolina

7. Charleston

Charleston is an urban magnet for millennials — 30% of the population’s 123,000 people are young adults. It’s the biggest city on our list with a range of opportunities for job seekers. The city expects 11,000 new jobs in the region over the next two years, and over 25,000 new jobs in the next five years, according to the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. The main job boom is expected to be in fields including computers, software, science and engineering, sales and marketing and also in the medical industry. Charleston is above all a port city, and boasts the fastest-growing facility in the country, according to the chamber.

Charleston, SC is One of The Best Cities in the US

Charleston, SC is One of The Best Cities in the US

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 08, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCThe most exciting travel story in America right now? The resurgence of cities large and small.

Nat Geo Travel is passionate about tales of urban renewal, about communities that have collaborated to improve their Main Streets, about smart cities that have pursued development policies that produce happiness.

They've identified the top U.S. small cities based on unconventional metrics that lead to happiness: green spaces, galleries, coffee shops, breweries, music venues, Instagrammable moments, and more.

Next we sorted U.S. cities into three groups based on their population: 40K-100K, 100K-200K, and 200K-600K.

They combined core statistics with social media data on nightlife, culture, restaurants, and the like to determine the city leaders for each population group in categories from meatiest (lots of steakhouses and delis) to greenest (most parkland), based on per capita results.

Happy places for locals are also rewarding places for travelers.

#11 Charleston, South Carolina

Instagrammers love Charleston’s abundance of art. Works by local artists will fill the rooms and public spaces of the new Hotel Bennett, opening this summer on a chunk of prime real estate overlooking Marion Square. It’s a great crash pad for checking out Charleston’s booming arts scene, which ranks high in our survey because of a large number of schools and galleries, like the Art Institute of Charleston and Helena Fox Fine Art. The latter specializes in works by southern artists such as West Fraser, known for his muted paintings of nearby Low Country. Performing arts shine at the grand, three-year-old Gaillard Center, which hosts concerts and dance shows and serves as one of the venues for the city’s celebrated Spoleto Festival, taking place May 25 to June 10 in 2018.
