Best Place to Live in South Carolina is Charleston

Best Place to Live in South Carolina is Charleston

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 15, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCTropical beaches and sea islands, South Carolina lies in the southeast of the United States and has a whole host of darling towns and villages to explore.

Hilton Head Island, infamous Myrtle Beach and of course Charleston, home to Fort Sumter; the list of reasons to love little old SC goes on and on! This state once thrived on agriculture and natural resources but in more modern times there is a big industry for steel and machinery production, meaning jobs are in no short supply.

Talking about jobs, what other factors do we need to take into consideration when seeking a new place to live?

Some would say access to public schools, others would say cost of living, some would have a strong focus on seeking a town with the lowest crime rates. In reality, it is all these factors, and a few more, that we think about when searching for a new abode.

We appreciate that finding all that information in one place can be quite a challenge so we have risen to the occasion and created our list of the 15 best places to live in South Carolina, taking into account all the facts, figures and statistics that are important to you!

10. Charleston, SC

Back to South Carolina’s picture perfect coast, we go. This is a port city that was founded way back in 1670, making it one of the oldest in the country. Speaking of old there is a yesteryear charm to Charleston with its cobbled streets and antebellum houses painted pastel hues of yellow and grey.

This is an expensive place to play, but not Sullivan’s Island expensive. With 127,694 people living here earning roughly $55,500 a year there is affordability hidden behind the pricey exterior.

In terms of public schooling, Charleston is the place to be, 68 schools in the district and with several offering a Montessori style of learning, parents get offered a broad range of options for their youngsters.

Best Places in the State of South Carolina? Charleston is in the Top Ten

Best Places in the State of South Carolina? Charleston is in the Top Ten

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 08, 2018

The cream of the crop in the Palmetto State.

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCTo the untrained eye they are the places that have awesome economies. They’re the places in Palmetto State where people have the best jobs, residents are all above average, and the sun shines the most.

However, at HomeSnacks, we don’t trust the untrained eye and instead look to data to understand the best places to call home in South Carolina.

There might be some surprises on this list, but when you look at the unbiased data, it’s hard to argue against.

After analyzing 61 places in South Carolina, we came up with this list of the best places:

  1. Mount Pleasant
  2. Tega Cay
  3. Mauldin
  4. James Island
  5. Lexington
  6. Forest Acres
  7. Simpsonville
  8. Clemson
  9. Charleston
  10. Hanahan

Follow along as we provide more insight into how we reached our overall best places to live in South Carolina.

The Pressing Question: Size

Before we even started to collect data, we had to answer a tough question: Is it fair to pit Columbia with a population of 132,537 against places with a population of 18?

We firmly decided no, that just isn’t fair.

So to create our ranking, we broke places to live into three tiers:

  • Cities — Populations over 5,200
  • Towns — Populations between 1,000 and 5,200
  • Small Towns — Populations below 1,000

This left us with 61 cities, 143 towns, and 157 small towns.

We then decided, no matter how much anyone loves their town, the best places have more of everything and therefore you need to have over 5,200 people to truly be ‘the best’.

How We Calculated The Best Place To Live In South Carolina

Now that we had our set of cities, it was time to rank them.

We ranked each place in South Carolina across a number of criteria from one to 61, with one being the best.

We then took the average rank across all criteria, with the city posting the lowest overall score being crowned the winner of the title “Best Place To Live In South Carolina”.

The criteria we looked at were:

  • Median Home Values
  • Median Income
  • Population Density (Higher better)
  • Unemployment Rate
  • Commute Time
  • Crime
  • Education Levels
  • Health Insurance Coverage
  • Poverty rates

9. Charleston

  • Population: 129,888
  • Rank Last Year: 9 (No Change)
  • Home Values: $269,400 (4th best)
  • Unemployment Rate: 5.9% (13th best)

Charleston is one of the greatest places to be in South Carolina.

Being in the top 25% for unemployment, education, and crime index all help to keep Charleston from acquiring any kind of inferiority complex.

That, and the fact that Charleston is largest town in the top ten.

We wouldn’t be surprised if more and more publications start to call Charleston one of America’s gems for 2018.

Renting vs. Buying in Your Retirement

Renting vs. Buying in Your Retirement

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCA white picket fence surrounding a house with 2.4 children, a dog, a cat, a station wagon. This is the American dream.

But owning your own home might not be so dreamy as you approach retirement. In fact, since 1990 homeownership has been decreasing among 55- to 64-year-olds, a trend which experts suggest is likely to continue in the coming years.

Owning a home in retirement does have benefits, but make sure you weigh up the pros and cons before you make a decision. Here are a few reasons to consider on both sides of the argument.

Benefits of renting

Even if you have long since paid off your mortgage, your twilight years could still be plagued by the cost of home maintenance.

As your property gets older, what were once reasonable maintenance costs could balloon into an expensive burden.

Sometimes your home isn’t somewhere that you want to be. Maybe you want to move to a state with warmer weather, or have the flexibility to up sticks and move closer to family. Some retirees migrate with the birds, taking up an abode abroad in a different, warmer climate during winter months.

As a renter, you always have the option to leave as soon as your lease ends, unlike selling a home which could take months and involve many expenses.

Selling your house prior to retirement might be a good move if you are looking for a for a location independent lifestyle in your golden years.

Charleston, SC Wins Again!

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, April 05, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCThe Holy City maintained its title as the South's Best City in a Southern Living reader poll.

This year's "Southern Living South's Best" ranked a variety of "bests," including the city, tiny town, small town, beach, festival and grocery store.

Charleston, which won the title in the previous edition, was again named the "South's Best City."

"Our obsession with this jewel of the Lowcountry has only grown as the Holy City has expanded its culinary scene, added a bevy of hotels and inns, and opened glittery new shops," the article states.

In addition to the best city honor, South Carolina can claim the best beach. The Palmetto State finished with three of the top five contenders for that honor.

Spoleto Festival USA topped their list of best Southern festivals, with another Charleston contender in second place.

Aiken took the top honor as the South's Best Small Town.

Charleston, SC: The Friendliest City in the South

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SCWhen it comes to friendliness, hospitality, and warmth, cities often get a bad rap: The traffic, the crowds, the lack of manners! Southern cities, though, tell a different story: Despite the hustle-and-bustle, they still manage to exude the graciousness of small towns and radiate the warmth of a Sunday potluck after church.

While old-fashioned hospitality seems to color the entirety of our region, some cities still manage to distinguish themselves as the friendliest of all. So we asked, and y’all answered, supplying us with fifteen of the South’s friendliest cities. There may be crowds in these Southern destinations, but they’ll smile at you; and when there’s a long line outside of that crazy-popular barbecue spot, well, people will respect your place in it—no pushing or shoving.

That’s just how we city slickers do things in the South … New York and L.A., it’s time to take notes. And, number one on the list of Friendliest Cities in the South...

Why Charleston, S.C. Is a Top Place to Live

Why Charleston, S.C. Is a Top Place to Live

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 13, 2018

Abberly at West Ashley Apartments, Charleston, SFew cities on the Top 100 Best Places to Live list are as steeped in their history as Charleston. Since the mid-1970s the Mayor has generally been credited with helping grow Charleston into a modern small town while maintaining the antebellum charm that drew so many to it in the first place. If you look at the other cities on the Top 100, you’ll see some trends in amenities and programs that make them great places to live. Many of those ideas had their seeds in Charleston.

The city began its modern resurgence by developing the waterfront area into public space with surrounding low-rise development. Getting the parks right was an important first step. Parks are forever. Charleston has invested greatly in creating public waterfront spaces.

The Spoleto Festival, a two-week long arts festival, helped put the city on the international map and forced it to up its game. If you’re going to present a world-class event you have to be a world-class city.

Additionally, the Citadel is one of the most prestigious military colleges in the nation, which has its home in Charleston. The South Carolina Aquarium is located here as well, and Charleston has ranked well on the Top 10 cities for historic preservation, top 10 downtowns, top 10 spring break destinations among others.

Charleston has borrowed ideas from other cities too. A program that celebrates the start of the school year with a giveaway of backpacks and schools supplies to 10,000 families. There is also a monthly open house in the mayor’s office and any resident can drop in on the first Tuesday of each month and tell say what’s on their mind.

Creating great cities for all residents is one of the core values that is looked for in its Best Places.
