Free Comic Book Day is a single day–the first Saturday in May each year–when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores!

Comic book fans and collectors come in all sizes and ages. And with so much variety, there’s something for everyone in one of the several comic book genres:

Super Heroes: Superman was the star of the very first comic book when he appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Since then, Stan Lee and many others have contributed to our “modern mythology” with a plethora of heroes and villains.

Manga: Asian style graphic novels hugely popular today. Within manga, there are many varieties like romance, action, etc.

Slice-of-Life: These portray real life in autobiographical form and appeal to older teens and adults.

Humor: These give “comics” their name by their silly and ridiculous nature. (Think “Mad” magazine”)

Non-fiction: These explore topics like history, science, and politics.

Science-Fiction/Fantasy: Where the imagination runs wild with stories of other worlds.

Horror: Scary, creepy, spine-tingling stories with grotesque and alarming illustrations.

Visit a comic book store to browse the vast and diverse comics and graphic novels available. And stop in at one of these local comic book stores to pick up your FREE comic on Saturday, May 7.

Have you heard the phrase “reduce your footprint.” This is simply a way to say “be good, responsible stewards of planet Earth.” After all, right now, and for the foreseeable future, this is the only home planet option we have. And it’s pretty awesome, as far as planets go, cradling us in a just-right environment—so we can eat, breathe, and watch American Idol.

Volunteer at Beach Sweet and Reduce Your Footprint!

Myfootprint.org shares several ways to reduce our footprint: use cleaner transport, add energy-saving features to our homes, adopt energy-saving habits, eat organic, use biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products, and adopt water-saving habits. They share many ideas and tips to help us live in a more environmentally conscience and responsible way.

A great volunteer opportunity is coming up where you can put the footprint-reduction thing into action. The Earth Day Beach Sweep is Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 4:00pm – 5:00pm at Folly Beach–about 13 miles from Abberly at West Ashley apartments.

Join the Aquarium staff on Folly Beach to help clean up the earth for her birthday! Help clean up trash such as bottles, wrappers, old beach chairs and more to help ensure that Folly Beach remains beautiful. The South Carolina Aquarium is committed to protecting and conserving our planet, especially the beaches for the residents of South Carolina and the creatures of the ocean, such as nesting sea turtles. Meet us at the 6th Street WEST beach access at 4 p.m. for some conservation fun!

Beach Sweep is a way to help kids personalize the abstract concept of environmental consciousness. It’s also a great way to spend time together outdoors focusing on doing something positive for our local community, and the world!
