A mirror can be used to bounce candlelight around the room and crystals (or other reflective surfaces) are great for adding that extra festive sparkle.
For already existing lighting, try changing out the light bulbs to something more festive. A soft rose light in a corner lamp provides a cheerful glow. Lit candles inside colored glass votives adds sparkle throughout a room.
If your room is large and has a high ceiling, you can use several types of small lamps to create low pools of light and make the room cozier.
Highlight particular areas of the room such as the fireplace, the buffet table, up a staircase, or in a potted tree, with a string of twinkle lights to create a shimmering glow.
